Cooperation with YU Department of Landscape Architecture to build Gyeongju World Culture Expo 'Environment Forest' Agree to establish work internship program for future graduates of YU Department of Landscape Architecture [Mar 14, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) and the Gyeongju World Culture Expo (Kim, Kwan-yong) agreed on exchange and cooperation for the development of the Gyeongju World Culture Expo and the globalization Korean landscape culture. YU President Noh Seok-kyun and Gyeongbuk Governor and Gyeongju World Culture Expo Organizing Committee Kim Kwan-yong signed an MOU on exchange and cooperation at the YU president's reception room at 10:30 a.m. on the 14th. Thus, the two institutes decided to join forces for the development of garden culture contents connected to the creative Silla culture, hands-on training to foster experts in landscaping and gardening, and joint research. Furthermore, they agreed to work together on providing the opportunity for a garden festival for global exchange of garden cultures. At this MOU signing ceremony, organizing committee chairperson Kim Kwan-yong, secretary-general Lee Dong-woo, vice secretary-general Song Moon-geun, contents development director Jin Young-woo, and facilities team director Kim Bong-muk from the Gyeongju Culture Expo and president Noh Seok-kyun, public relations cooperation director Lee Jae-hoon, College of Natural Resources dean Lee Yong-gi, Graduate School of Environment & Public Health Studies dean Park Chan-yong, and Department of Landscape Architecture dean Kwon Jin-wook participated from YU were in attendance. Organizing committee chairperson Kim Kwan-yong explained, "We showed the world the possibility of the Cultural Silk Road through the Istanbul-Gyeongju World Cultural Expo last year. We need the help of YU to establish a global environmental forest in Gyeongju, the start and end point of the Silk Road." He also added, "YU and Gyeongbuk should join hands to promote the creative economy and expand global exchange through cultural programs." YU President Noh Seok-kyun replied, "I hope that this MOU will be the start of the modern industrialization and globalization of Korea's garden culture." With this MOU, the two institutes are expected to ▲conduct join research and development of landscape designs and cultural contents, and expositions for the distribution of garden cultures ▲provide practical internship programs for landscaping students and field experience for the effective operation of educational programs specialized for garden design and culture ▲joint hosting of seminars, academic conferences, and symposiums ▲sharing of knowledge and information regarding education and research in order to contribute in the development and competitiveness of the two institutes.

Donated 3 million won in scholarships last year and makes donation for second straight year All workers chipped to keep their promise of making donations every year [Mar 13, 2014] Familiar faces visited the YU External Cooperation & Management team on the 12th. The sanitation workers in charge of the YU campus environment came to donate 3 million won in scholarships. This visit is their second since donating 3 million won in March 2013. This is a very meaningful scholarship as they kept their promise from 2013 that they would donate scholarships every year. 60 YU sanitation workers took 5,000 won from their monthly salary for donations and said that they would make a donation of 3 million won every year. Manager of the YU External Cooperation & Management team Kim, Jong Ho said, "I am thankful for them keeping their promise to donate scholarships and coming back this year." He added, "I know that this scholarship was raised from their monthly paycheck that is not too much, so we will make sure to use it wisely." YU is planning to include the scholarship donated by the sanitation workers in the school's general scholarship fund and have them go to students studying amidst difficult financial situations. Sanitation worker Jung, Kyung Soon (64) who handed over the scholarship on behalf of all the sanitation workers said, "I wish that we could give more and more frequently," and added, "I know it is not much but I hope it helps out students even just a bit."

Oh, Dong Yep (Department of Applied Microbiology class of '02) earned his bachelor's, master's and PhD at YU Registered in 'Marquis Who's Who in the World 2014' Published 8 theses in SCI journals including 'Animal Genetics', the world's most prominent academic journal in livestock [Mar 12, 2014] Dr. Oh, Dong Yep (30) who earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate's at YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) was listed in 'Marquis Who's Who in the World 2014', one of the three top biographical dictionaries in the world. 'Marquis Who's Who in the World', which is published in the US, selects their figures through a strict screening process among those who made significant achievements in various sectors throughout the world. Dr. Oh published 13 theses from 2011 through studies on the taste of beef by studying SNP [single nucleotide polymorphism - general mutation that appears in various DNA sequence in single parts of chromosomes] in the genes of cows with the goal of producing high quality beef. Eight of these theses were published in SCI level journals including Animal Genetics, the world's most prestigious livestock academic journal. Dr. Oh enrolled at the YU Department of Applied Microbiology. After graduating in February 2009, he worked on his master's degree at the YU Graduate School of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology from March 2009, and after completing his PhD course, he earned his doctorate's degree on February 21 of this year. He is currently working as a researcher in charge of animal genomics R&D at the Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle) Research Lab of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Livestock Research Institute.

Hosted by the YU Protein Sensor Research Center, 'Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Aging and Aging-associated Diseases' Presenting latest convergence study research results on 'biotechnology, electronic engineering, basic medicine and nanotechnology' 1:30 P.M. on the 26th, YU Biotechnology Hall Room 210 [Feb 26, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) held an international symposium for announcing the latest research results on early diagnosis and treatment methods for aging and aging-associated diseases. This symposium, which was jointly held by the YU Protein Sensor Research Center (director Cho, Kyung Hyun), the Serum Bio Medical Research and Specialized Human Resources Fostering Project Team, and the Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Science of Belarus, was held at the YU Biotechnology Hall Room 210 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the 26th. This international symposium was held to search for early diagnosis and treatment methods inflammations that cause aging and senile diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes through convergence studies of biotechnology, electronic engineering, basic medicine and nanotechnology. In the first session, National Academy of Science of Belarus Professor Vladimir Kulchitsky held a presentation on 'Occurrence and progress of inflammation and its path connecting to pain and aging', followed by YU College of Medicine Physiology Department Professor Doh, Kyung Oh's study titled 'Effects of growth factors on obesity and aging in adipose cells'. In the second session, National Academy of Science of Belarus Professor Andrey Denisov made a presentation on 'Study results on neural networks involved in the signal transduction in the cranial nerve regions' and lastly, YU Department of Electronic Engineering Professor Kim, Sung Ho made a presentation on 'Technologies for finding singularities in skin organs and diagnosing diseases using high-resolution camera systems'. YU School of Biotechnology Professor Cho, Kyung Hyun, who prepared this international symposium, said, "It is anticipated that joint studies between YU and the National Academy of Science of Belarus will be activated through this event," and added "I hope that this international convergence research will help in developing diagnosis and treatment methods for aging and aging-associated diseases." Meanwhile, prior to this international symposium on the 25th, the YU Protein Sensor Research Center, Serum Bio Medical Research and Specialized Human Resources Fostering Project Team, and the National Academy of Science of Belarus signed an MOU on collaborative research.

YU GTEP Team helps small & medium businesses enter overseas markets through the industry-university cooperation In the forefront for small & medium business exports such as buyer consulting and interpretation at overseas conferences 42 students participated in 12 domestic and international exhibits in 2013 [Feb 27, 2014] The YU Global Trade Experts incubating Program (GTEP) Team (Director Lee, Keon Hee) is spearheading entry of small & medium businesses in overseas markets. Students of the YU GTEP Team are participating in various international trade exhibits to help small & medium businesses enter overseas markets. The students must participate in the exhibits by first receiving education and making analysis to understand the product, while also making a great deal of preparations needed for marketing such as pre-studies on overseas markets. Thus, they are exhibiting skills no less than the professionals at the exhibit. 4 students from the GTEP team attended the Hong Kong International Stationery Fair from January 6 to 9. They were looking for ways to help APLO (CEO Baek, Moo Yeul), a local frame manufacturer, to reach out to overseas markets. The students explained the major products of APLO to participants of the expo and carried out direct consulting for buyers around the world. The students obtained a buyer list of over 40 people interested in the products and are continuously maintaining contact with them even after the exhibit in order to sign the final contract. Baek, Moo Yeul, the CEO of APLO who is an alumnus of the YU School of International Economics and Business, said, "When a friend suggested that I participate in the exhibit with the GTEP team, I was doubtful about its effectiveness." He then added, "However, thanks to GTEP, I was able to take a step closer towards exporting and I feel really fortunate about this." Prior to this, the GTEP Team participated in the CES 2014 (The International Consumer Electronics Show 2014), which is the world's largest electronics products exhibit held in Las Vegas from January 7 to 10 together with Seyoung Information & Telecommunication (CEO Lee, Se Young), a network equipment maintenance and mobile communication product manufacturing company. YU students participating in the exhibit were praised by the companies as they provided the translation and the product introduction to over 200 buyers. Seyoung Information & Telecommunication CEO Lee, Se Young said, "We received a lot of help in 2013 so we decided to work with the YU GTEP Team again" and added, "If given the opportunity, I hope to continuously construct the industry-university relation with YU GTEP." Lee, Jae Gyeong (School of International Economics and Business, sophomore, 20) who participated in CES 2014 said, "The hands-on knowledge I learned in GTEP team helped a lot in the exhibit," and added, "Being able to directly experience overseas markets through international expos will be a valuable asset as I aim to become a global trader." The YU GTEP Team was established to foster customized human resources in current demand by companies by integrating theory-based university education with practical knowledge and field experience. It first began in September 2001 as the TI (Trade Incubator) Project Team and was designated as the GTEP Team from the then Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy in July 2007. In 2013 alone, GTEP helped domestic companies tap into the international markets with the participation of 42 students in a total of 12 exhibitions held in Korea and abroad including the '2013 Dubai Telecommunication Expo (GITEX 2013)'. As of now in 2014, GTEP participated in a total of five overseas exhibits including the '2014 Hong Kong International Stationery Fair'. They are also scheduled to participate in 'CeBIT (Center for Bureau, Information, Telecommunication) 2014', which is the world's largest information and telecommunication exhibit in the world that will be held in Hanover, Germany from March 10 to 14.

Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation gives first 6 year accreditation among College of Medicines in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Recognition of its excellence such as 100% pass rate in the 78th Korean Medical Licensing Examination [Feb 5, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) became the first in the region to receive '6 year accreditation' in the '2013 Evaluation and Accreditation for Medical Education' by the Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation (KIMEE). KIMEE evaluates 6 areas in Korean medical education institutes such as college operation system, basic medical education curriculum, students, professors, facilities & equipment, and post-graduate education to give 4 or 6 year accreditation. The 2013 evaluation and accreditation for medical education was carried out through self-evaluation research reports of 6 universities subject to evaluation (YU College of Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Kosin University College of Medicine, Ajou University School of Medicine, Kangwon National University School of Medicine, and Konkuk University School of Medicine) beginning with the '2013 Evaluation and Accreditation for Medical Education Seminar' held on February 21 of last year, followed up with written evaluations for student reports and on-site visit evaluations. The final evaluation results were reviewed by the accreditation committee made up of 13 representatives from the government, social organizations, parents of students, and the medical field and were confirmed on January 24. In result, it was found that the YU College of Medicine operated appropriate education curriculum and made efforts to fulfill the social responsibilities of the universities, and that it more than satisfied the standards of the evaluation accreditation standards of KIMEE. Thus, it received the longest period of accreditation of 6 years. This is the first time for a College of Medicine in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region to receive '6 year accreditation'. In addition to the YU College of Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Kosin University College of Medicine and Ajou University School of Medicine also received 6 year accreditation, while Kangwon National University and Konkuk University School of Medicine received 4 year accreditation. Meanwhile, YU College of Medicine recorded a 100% pass rate in the 78th Korean Medical Licensing Examination announced last month, and is thus recognized for its superior medical education.
