<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Yeungnam University selects 31 \'WTW\' and 20 \'WTK\' teams 1 million won per person given for Europe and US backpacking travellers during vacation [December 18, 2008] WTW and WTK teams departing for backpacking trip (from front row on the left in counter-clockwise direction: Lee Jeong-yeob, Kupina, Kwon Yong-wook, Doh Hyeon-ji, Nam Hye-ran, Lee Hwa-jeong, Lim Jong-hyeok, Lee Dong-jin, Lee Min-jeong) \"Though the exchange rate sky-rocketed and the economy is doing bad, I really wanted to go backpacking overseas before the graduation. Fortunately, the university will pay for some of the expenses so I will make sure that I will experience as many things as I can and learn as much as I can.\" Lim Jong-hyeok (24) a senior in the School of Architecture at Yeungnam University will be backpacking in Australia early next month. Three months ago, he made a team called \'Studio A+\' with his classmates Lee Dong-jin (24) and Lee Min-jeong (24, female) and made thorough preparations. His team was selected by the university\'s overseas backpacking support programs, and won 3 million won (1 million won per person) by the university. He\'s enjoying every day of his life these days. Being an overseas trip right before going off into the real world, their purpose is quite clear. Fitting to their status as students of architecture, they wish to find plans for urban-branding Daegu through \'public design\'. Public design refers to creating an image of urban sceneries starting from light poles, benches, signs, bus-stops to building facade design and skyline planning. This is because they are convinced that their roles as students of architecture is to present a public design strategy that takes full advantage of the urban identity for Daegu in preparation of the 2011 IAAF World Championships. For this, they are planning to visit Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, which are the 4 major cities of Australia in 12 days. These are all cities that succeeded in urban-branding through public designs for the Sydney Olympics. Lim stated, \"We will study the 4 major cities of Australia and present public designs unique to Daegu that show the history and rich sentiment of Daegu.\" Thus, Yeungnam University is paying for part of the expenses needed for travels to students who are departing for their \'prepared backpacking trip\'. Starting from this winter break, the university will also provide expenses for backpacking in Korea made up of teams combined with foreign and Korean students. This is for a greater effect in \'Two-Directional Global Education\'. Firstly, \'Window to the World\'(WTW), which has been in place for 6 years, 13th term, is a global program that is best known in Yeungnam University. In the last summer vacation, 93 students in 34 teams received financial support from the university and went on overseas backpacking trips. In this winter vacation, 85 students in 31 teams departed for the US, Europe, Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia and India. There are almost 1,200 students who have experienced the world through the WTW program so far. Yeungnam University gives 600 thousand won per student going to China and Southeast Asia, 800 thousand won per student going to Japan and 1 million won to students going to Europe and the US. Depending on the results of their reports, the 1st place team will be awarded 700 thousand won, 2nd place team 500 thousand won and third place team 300 thousand won as scholarships in order to encourage global experience learning. MESA (Doh Hyeon-ji and 2 students) is composed of female students in the School of Management, and was selected for the WTW and will be heading off to India in January. The title of their trip is \'Exploring India\'s Medical Tourism City\'. Their objective is to search for a plan to distinguish \'Medical City Daegu\'. For this, they will be travelling to distinguished medical tourism cities of India, such as Delhi, Agra, Gurgaon, Mumbai and Chennai for 2 weeks. They will also visit a nursing college in Chennai to examine the current situation of fostering specialized human resources. Doh Hyeon-ji (23, junior in the School of Management) pointed out that \"Medical tourism is a blue-ocean industry that creates 40 billion dollars in profits globally every year. Even in Korea, There is fierce competition for promoting medical tourism in Daegu, Busan, Incheon, Yeosu, Gangneung and Jeju. The problem, however, is that there is no unique feature in the plans for promoting medical tourism in Daegu.\" She also added, \"We should benchmark the successful strategies of India, such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Therapy, etc to find a plan to promote medical tourism in Daegu.\" Meanwhile, Yeungnam University will, for the first time, sponsor the \'Window to Korea\'(WTK) program from this winter break. WTK is a program for providing 300 thousand won in expenses for domestic backpacking trips for teams composed of 1 or more foreign student(s) and 2 Korean students at Yeungnam University. Lee Jeong-yeob (26, junior) of the School of International Economics and Business and Kwon Yong-wook (23, sophomore) of the School of Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering and Computer Science will explore Seoul with Shefki Kupina (23, junior) of the School of Management on the 21st. Their team name is \'Hello Korea\' and Kupina first came to Korea last September as an exchange student from Sixion University in the Netherlands. Thanks to his \'buddy\' (1:1 friend between Korean and foreign students), Lee Jeong-yeob, he was able to find much help in his school work and felt the warm hospitality of Koreans. However, he still does not know many things about the Korean society. Seoul, where the past, the current and the future of Korea coexists, will help him expand his horizons on the Korean society. Kupina is greatly looking forward to his travels to Seoul. \"In Europe, there is little information and lack of the latest information on different countries and especially on Asia. I also did not know Korea properly,\" said he. He also added, \"I want to experience Korea as much as I can while I\'m here as an exchange student and then when I return to my home, I will share the real fact of Korea.\" Lee, who will join him in his travels to Seoul said, \"My pride was hurt and it was quite shocking that he thought Korea was an under-developed country before he came here as an exchange student.\" He added, \"I want him to learn and feel Korea properly through this opportunity. That\'s why I\'ve been studying the history and culture of Korea for a couple months now. Through this, I was actually able to learn by realizing the true meaning of \'what is the most Korean is the most global\'.\" WTK, which was launched with the goal that we need to know ourselves first before we can be truly globalized, will send a total of 20 teams all around the nation during this winter break.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\">[December 4, 2008] A cultural struggle that was left in the clouds for 10 years due to the \'NIMBY\' (not in my backyard) effect and conflicts with various development projects finally found a solution. On the 3rd, Yeungnam University (president Tong-ki Woo) agreed on a donation contract for the moving and restoration of \'Hwasan Seowon\' (photo), which is Gyeongbuk-do cultural property no. 22, with its owner, Indong-Jang family. On this day, Indong-Jang family also donated 100 million won to Yeungnam University. Hwasan Seowon, which is located at Jung-ri, Seokjeok-myeon, Chilgok-gun is a school that was established for fostering students of Jang Gyeong-woo (Manhoedang) in the 21st year of King Hyojong (1651) of the Joseon (also choson, chosun) Dynasty. In the 6th year of Kim Heonjong (1840), the community agreed to move the school to Hwasan at Seonggok-ri, Seokjeok-myeon, Chilgok-gun and erect a shrine for Manhoedang. However, in the 8th year of King Gojong (1871), Confucian memorial halls were ordered to be demolished and now only the auditorium remains. The auditorium has five rooms in the front and three on the side making it a relatively large building and there is a floor-heated room around the well-floor. This displays the architectural style of the later Joseon Dynasty and it has high preservation value. However, because of rapid development around the area due to establishment of new towns, and collapse-threats of the building worsened, it looked for a place to move to for the last 10 years. However, local residents all opposed it from moving to its area and thus, was basically left abandoned. This is because once it is designated as a cultural property, there are various regulations in the region of a 500m radius on building new structures, changing use of buildings, etc. descendants of Indong Jang Manhoedang thus notified Yeungnam University that they wanted to donate the Hwasan Seowon in July 2005. Thus, they visited Yeungnam University and began pursuing the moving of the historic school to the university. In result, a donation contract was agreed upon on today and transfer/restoration projects will soon begin. Through this donation, Hwasan Seowon will move to the west side of the \'Gyeongju Gable Roof House\' at Yeungnam University Gyeongsan Campus. In late December, Yeungnam University will begin the transfer and restoration project and once it is completed, it will be used for traditional culture education for the students.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> First Discovery of Arteriosclerosis Treatment Effects from Insect Proteins [November 20, 2008] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_006894658807381448 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2009-01-19_10-08-17_378.jpg\" target=_blank> An undergraduate student in a local university issued a thesis as the primary author for an SCI level international journal. He is Park Ki-hoon (23, photo, left, instructor Jo Gyeong-hyeon), a senior at the Yeungnam University school of Biotechnology. This is the first thesis that revealed that the proteins extracted from fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea) could be transformed using bio-engineering technologies to use for treatment of arteriosclerosis. This thesis will be in the December, 2008 issues of the prominent international academic journal, \'Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology\' that is published by Elsevier company of the US. It is very rare that an undergraduate student is able to put their name on an SCI international academic journal as the primary author. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_03917841096495524 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2009-01-19_10-10-42_379.jpg\" target=_blank> It is especially meaningful because the journal in which the thesis is being placed on is the second most influential and prominent journal in the related field. Considering the sweat and effort that was invested in this, this result may only have been obvious. Last year around this time, he did not take any days off and had no vacation investing all of his time making tests on the functions and structures of human serum protein and fall webworm proteins. After one year of working with cells in order to evaluate the effects of arteriosclerosis cell models, he discovered the possibilities of developing treatments for arteriosclerosis and placed his name on an SCI level internationally prominent academic journal. Profess or Jo Gyeong-hyeon (40), who has been instructing him for three years showed how proud he was of this student saying, \"I am only surprised of how sincere and diligent he is conducting his research, which is not seen very often among undergraduate students.\" He comes to school every day at 8am and leaves the lab past 9pm. His colleagues call him \'Kant of the school of Biotechnology\' and his main interest is in developing a pre-diagnosis kit and treatment for cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, a main cause of sudden death among Korean adults, are potentially innate in 60% of the adult population and it is the leading cause of death for any single disease. Myocardial infarction is a disease that can only be diagnosed after it has progressed for a long time and therefore, there is a high need for a kit that can predict this early and make diagnostics. Since last summer, he has begun making comparative studies on the blood of myocardial infarction patients and the blood of normal people in order to develop a myocardial infarction bio-marker. He is a senior and in order to continue his studies, he has submitted an application at Yeungnam University graduate school of biotechnology and a MS/Ph.D course. He said, \"I first selected my major as biotechnology because I became interested in it after watching the movie Jurassic Park, but it was difficult because movies and reality was very different. However, after I started doing tests full time, I became confident that this was the path I wanted to take.\" He also added, \"Now, even when I spend my entire day on researching, I don\'t feel tired or that I am wasting my time. This is because I am convinced that my research may grant patients and their families hope and power.\" <See Related Articles> @Donga Ilbo (2008-11-24) http://www.donga.com/fbin/output?n=200811240049 @Maeil News (200008-11-21} http://www.imaeil.com/sub_news/sub_news_view.php?news_id=53450&yy=2008 @Yeungnam Daily (2008-11-21) http://www.yeongnam.com/yeongnam/html/yeongnamdaily/society/article.shtml?id=20081121.010070718590001 @Hankook-i (2008-11-21) http://news.hankooki.com/lpage/society/200811/h2008112102525974990.htm @Yeonhab News (200009-11-21) http://app.yonhapnews.co.kr/YNA/Basic/article/search/YIBW_showSearchArticle.aspx?searchpart=article&searchtext=%ec%98%81%eb%82%a8%eb%8c%80&contents_id=AKR20081120114300053 @Seoul Economy (2008-11-21) http://economy.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/200811/e2008112020574148200.htm @Maeil Economy (2008-11-21) http://news.mk.co.kr/outside/view.php?year=2008&no=708502 @TBC Prime News (208-11-20) http://www.tbc.co.kr/tbc_news/n08_today.html?mode=VW&number=55304 @MBC News (200008-11-20) http://www.tgmbc.co.kr/News/NewsContentView.jsp?Action=query&category=News&receive_date=20081120&sequence=0017&Copy_no=00&news_code=000003&work_site=T&no=38

As part of the young adult cultural exchange program that Korea\'s Korea-China Culture Association (Future Forest) and the Chinese Communist Youth League, these visitors came to Yeungnam University on the 6th for a Korean-Chinese college student culture performance. In the afternoon of the 6th, they arrived at the Dormitory and about an hour later, they went to the Yeungnam University Law Library 3rd floor where there was welcoming event for them. In this event, there were 50 students from Yeungnam University including international students from China, Yeungnam University students who went to colleges in China as exchange students and representatives from the Yeungnam University student body. In the cultural performance following the banquet, clubs at University welcomed the Chinese students with extravagant dance performances, wushu demonstrations, folk performance and classic guitar performances. The Chinese students also sang folk songs of Chinese ethnic minority groups and also performed traditional dance performances of Korean Chinese and sang the Beijing Olympic theme song. Moon Hye-young (23, senior in Chinese and Chinese literature), who went to the Beijing University of Education said, \"There were many worries that they anti-Korean sentiment of China may have an effect on this event, but after meeting these students, I was totally relieved from this.\" She also stated, \"There are many things that we college students need to collaborate in for the future of the two nations, as well as the future of East Asia. I have come to believe that we will be able to work better together in the future.\" They also visited the \'Korean Chinese College Student Forum\' at Kyunghee University on the 5th and agreed to work in diplomatic cooperation for preventing and delaying desertification. The Chinese Communist Youth League has first established as the Socialist Youth League of China in Shanghai in August 1920, before the founding of the Communist Party of China. Since establishment of the Communist Party of China in July 1921, it was recomposed as an organization under the communist party in May 1922 and in 1925, its name was changed to the Chinese Communist Youth League. During the war against Japan, it was also called the Chinese Democratic Youth League and after establishing the new nation, its name was changed to the Chinese New Democracy Youth League. However, in 1957, its name was once again changed to the Chinese Communist Youth League. The Chinese Communist Youth League was once in its dark ages and had all of its operations suspended during the Culture Revolution. In October 1978, it held its 10th National Representative Conference and it finally began to be more strongly established. There are currently a total of 35.7 million members between the age of 14 and 25 in the Chinese Communist Party.
